SPECIAL EDUCATION EXPO

Every child with special needs has a right to an educational program that is suitable to his/her needs. Having the right education and the right tools is crucial in ensuring that a child fully realizes his/her full potential for development, both as an individual and as a member of the society.

It is for this reason that Etera Events, is initiating a Special Education Expo on December 1, 2009 at the newly renovated Glorietta Activity Center. Simultaneous to the exhibition is a Special Education forum, storytelling, games and performances by celebrities.

The Special Education Expo 2009 is the first fair on special education to be held in the country. With the theme “A World of Possibilities”, this event aims to bring together parents of special children, special education schools, therapy centers, toy manufacturers, suppliers of special tools and equipment, specialized food sellers, book publishers, and other SPED industry practitioners like teachers, doctors, therapists, among others.

The goal of the event is to create awareness on the needs of special children and provide options for these individuals to ensure they live a happy and normal life.

By contributing to make this event happen, you are helping improve the quality of life and dignity of more than 5.4 million Filipinos who are in need of special education products, equipments and services. Proceeds for the said event will be given to Support and Empower Abused Deaf Children, a non-profit organization dedicated at defending the rights of deaf children who are victims of sexual abuse and maltreatment.

One of the event’s major sponsors, World Vision, will be bringing celebrity endorsers to do intermission numbers, storytelling and other activities.

Instituto Cervantes stages the grandest Spanish film festival in Asia

It's a triple treat for film buffs as Instituto Cervantes de Manila brings back Película, the biggest annual Spanish Film Festival in Asia, at chosen venues in Metro Manila from October 1 to 31.

Due to the past successes of its first seven seasons, organizers have doubled the number of films (this year more than 40!), gone from one to three venues and lengthened the film festival. Cultural events have also been calendared, in line with the theme of this year's festival: Locos por el cine or Adik sa Pelikula.

With new partnerships forged by Instituto Cervantes, the cultural arm of the Spanish Embassy to the Philippines, and the strengthening support from Spanish filmmakers, last year's attendance by cinema enthusiasts is expected to increase this year. Last year, some 20,000 spectators attended the Festival.

"This year marks our 8th edition and we're very proud of how far the Festival's come in such a short period of time," said Instituto Cervantes director Jose Rodriguez. "We believe Película has the potential to foster incredible growth in arts and entertainment and attract the best of the best-acclaimed Spanish and Latin American filmmakers to this area. We are especially proud of the reputation the Festival has developed over the years as a great local venue to feature and premier award-winning Spanish films."

Selection of films will be divided into four groups this year: Official section at Greenbelt 3 Cinemas featuring Spanish contemporary and award-winning films; Spanish & Filipino documentaries at CCP which is a selection of 12 documentaries that bear testament to the growing vitality of the genre in the two countries; Spanish Cinema in 8 Films at the College of Saint Benilde featuring eight classical Spanish movies; and a selection of Latin-American indie productions entitled Cine en construcción (Films in progress), also scheduled at College of Saint Benilde.

Película kicks off on October 1 with an opening night featuring the movie No me pidas que te bese porque te besaré (Don't ask me to kiss you, because I will). This comedy is about a man who is repenting his decision to marry and takes guitar lessons with "special" people to distract himself before his wedding. Gracing the opening night at the Greenbelt 5 Fashion walk area will be a dance performance by B612, a vertical dance company who was brought to Manila by Instituto Cervantes to display their world-class dance and lights to local audience.

Multi-awarded films such as El truco del manco (The one-handed trick), Una palabra tuya, Los girasoles ciegos (The Blind Sunflowers), Rotorno a Hansala (Return to Hansala), and 3 Días make their Philippine premiere at the film festival, which starts also on October 1 at the Greenbelt 3 Cinemas.

Other films include El Nido Vacío (Empty Nest), a comedy that explores the gap that occurs when children grow up and move away from home; and Dieta mediterranea (Mediterranean Diet), a story about a girl named Sofia who was regarded as the "best chef in the world" and the two men who helped her become a legend.

On October 7, Película gives tribute to Mexico's film industry with the Mexican Cinema Night. Headlining this evening 2008 San Diego Latino Film Festival, La Zona (The Zone), a film about a wealthy compound surrounded by walls and surveillance system to protect the locals against the violence of the slums.

Running at the De La Salle University- College of St. Benilde (DLSU-CSB) from October 1 to 31 is a photo exhibition on the evolution of the Spanish cinema. Tagged as Crónica Visual del Cine Español (A Visual Chronicle of Spanish Cinema), the exhibit will be divided into the three periods of the Spanish cinema, aiming to recreate the journey of the films from the old Europe and Latin American tradition to the current contemporary style.

Alongside the exhibits at the DLSU-CSB will be a series of workshops on scriptwriting and editing as well as the showcasing of Latin American indie films. On October 14, 12:30 p.m., Chilean director Oscar Cardenas will grace the DLSU-CSB for the Asian premiere of his film Rabia.

Meanwhile, from October 7 to 31 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) is a photo exhibit on Filipino Filmmakers by renowned Spanish photographer Óscar Orengo. Featured in the exhibit – the first of its kind in the country – are local directors and actors from different generations like Peque Gallaga, Brilliante Mendoza, Lav Diaz and many more.

That same day, October 7, No todo es verdad, a selection of Filipino and Spanish documentaries will also begin at the CCP Dream Theater.

Película is organized by Instituto Cervantes, in cooperation with the Spanish Embassy in the Philippines, AECID, Ministerio de Cultura of Spain, Filmoteca del Ministerio de AA.EE. de España, Cine en Construcción, Spanish Program for Cultural Cooperation, Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day, LRT, MRT, Cultural Center of the Philippines, College of St.Benilde, Greenbelt and Ayala Malls Cinemas. Special thanks to Dusit Thani Manila - the official hotel residence, Qatar Airways - the official airline, Jaguar – the official luxury car, welovepost - the official post and design boutique and 2nd Avenue – the official TV media partner of Película.

The Time is Now

It’s now or never -- at least when it comes to teaching children the value of time and the discipline of time management.

Studies show 20% of the average workday is spent on ‘crucial’ and ‘important’ things, while 80% of the average workday is spent on things that have ‘little or no value.’

Kelvin Ngo, Operations Manager of Kids Watch Central asserts that this could have been prevented – if only these adults were taught the discipline of time management early on. “If we don't train them to have good habits while they are young, they will spend the rest of their lives trying to shake the bad ones.”

Ngo notes that while at first, being able to tell time guides kids on when to catch their favorite cartoon; they can apply the skill to more important things such as homework and eventually to work deadlines and client presentations.

So give your kids a head start on success -- here are some easy steps you can follow in teaching them the value of time and the discipline of time management:

Be armed with the basics!
The Chinese adage of the longest journey starting with a single step is also true for teaching your kids—and in this case, you first have to make them grasp the concept of ‘time.’

“Time is an abstract concept,” observes Ngo “So to make it more ‘real’ for children especially, concrete time telling tools such as a wrist watch is a must.” Ngo notes that it would help if these timepieces are visually appealing or interesting to the kids themselves. “If their favorite character is Spiderman or Barbie of course, they’re likely to be more interested in looking at watches that feature these characters as opposed to a plain-faced one. It’s about adding an element of ‘fun’ to a visual representation of time.”

Kids Watch Central --a retail outlet that specializes in kid’s watches—for instance, is one place where parents can source trendy and colorful character timepieces. Here characters such as Transformers, Hello Kitty, Barbie and Ben10 come alive to teach children the value of time and the discipline of time management.

To help raise awareness on the importance of time management among children, Kids Watch Central will be holding Kids Watch Central Family Fun Summit 2009 a parenting seminar on time management that takes this issue head-on. “It may sound like a cliché, but now’s the right time to do something about it;

“What makes Kids Watch Central Family Fun Summit 2009 different is that the lessons from it are not textbook-based. The insights that will be shared are from real-life mothers who actually had to experience teaching their kids first-hand,” notes Ngo.

Kids Watch Central --a retail outlet that specializes in kids watches—for instance, is one place where parents can source trendy and colorful character watches. Here characters such as Transformers, Hello Kitty, Barbie and Ben10 come alive to teach children the value of time and the discipline of time management. Kids Watch Central stores can be found in the children's accessories area of leading department stores.

Without doubt, parents should give their children an early head start on the lesson of time management. And with proper guidance and the right tools such as Kid’s Watch Central’s character timepieces, ‘now or never’ is not so daunting after all.

Kids Watch Central outlets are located inside the Children’s Accessories of leading department stores.

B Free Day with SMART

Students of member schools of the University Athletics Association of the Philippines (UAAP) and the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) gathered in a festive inter-university blowout mounted this weekend by leading wireless Internet provider Smart Bro.

Worthy of a Guinness record title, the huge crowd turn-out in “B Free Day” reached peak excitement as 10,000 units of Smart Bro prepaid wireless modems or ‘dongles’ were given away for free to the students, a first in the marketing initiatives by a wireless broadband company in the country.

Held at the Megatent in Ortigas Avenue, Pasig City, “B Free Day” thrilled the student crowd with back-to-back performances by popular rock bands Sandwich, Hale and Spongecola; raffle draws; and games and treats reminiscent of school fairs such as bail out jail booth, balloon darts, ball toss, back massages, burgers, beverages and other sponsors’ freebies—all beginning with the letter ‘b’.

Another popular section of “B Free” featured a remount of the successful Smart Bro Broadbandemonium – The Great SMART Bro Sale. The sale brought together major PC brands Acer, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, Neo and Toshiba, which have bundled Smart Bro in some of their latest models, to give buyers the right equipment to enjoy the Internet with Smart Bro’s fast connectivity.

"It's Krrunch Time, get Playful!"

It is really important for my kids to remember me as being a big part of their lives. Even if I am a working mom. Every moment that I have with my kids should be full of Krrunch. Every moment is important to me.

I always want to make it simple yet memorable.. Even if we are just at home. I make our activities memorable. We read books, we watch videos and we play games that in itself is unforgettable. My kids also look forwards to their favorite snacks after playtime is over and done with.

I read somewhere that he best time to spend with your children is in the first 10-12 years of their lives. As teenagers, they begin to distance themselves from you, so make the most of it when they are young, when they want to hug, sit on your knee and love every minute of your company..So whether just eating or even just watching TV. "It's Krrunch Time, get Playful!"

Manila Pen Anniv Disaster

Halo-halo Harana, Pancit Luglog and Schueblig each for P33 at the Lobby of Manila Pen

How much did the Halo-halo Harana, Pancit Luglog and Schueblig cost back in 1976? According to The Lobby of Manila Peninsula, they all cost P33 and on September 14, Monday, you can order the dishes, each at P33 only to celebrate The Lobby’s 33rd anniversary.

The Lobby 1976 Price roll back promo is on a first-come first-served basis, no reservations will be accepted from 12 noon to 11:59 p.m. All three items must be ordered and consumed at The Lobby.

The Lobby is located at the Ground Floor, Manila Peninsula, Makati City. Tel. No. 887-2888 local 6694.

The disaster happened because they didn't plan the logistics properly..
I really wished they thought of the mechanics and the logistics before doing this promo.
Here’s my story:
I arrived at 9PM sabi the guards said that it was over and I'm like the promo said its up to 11:59PM. I called before I left the house they said that the promo was up to 11:59PM. Initially they said that I needed to call to make sure that I have a reservation. But when i called they said that there's no reservations first come first served. Which means that there was no coordination between the front desk nila and the restaurant. They were other similar stories who made a call and we were all told the same thing. They also specified that it will not be good until supply lasts.

They said that there was a shortage of ingredients .. if the other items are not offered they should have said that item 1 is not offered only item 2 or 3. The line was really long but I could have waited. They should have been prepared to meet the demand. What happened was not truth in advertising..

Kimmy Dora

Do the fumbling thugs, cheeky melodrama, a song number, and action scenes near the end make a case of a satiric look at Filipino comedy? Or do the idea of big-name actors relegated to cameos playfully allegorize the irony that perpetual sidekick-slash-scene-stealer Eugene Domingo now headlines her own movie? Whatever the case, Joyce Bernal's hilariously animated "Kimmy Dora" -- a spruced-up slapstick touted as the actor's launching pad to lead stardom -- dashes along with the comedic precision that benefits from Domingo's impeccable charm as much as from Bernal's (incidentally a former film editor) comedic rhythm.

Epitomizing the kind of contagious comedy that utilizes her talent to the hilt, Domingo plays the double role of twins Kimmy and Dora, which are polar opposites of each other. Kimmy is the cruel genius who runs the family business, while Dora is the tenderhearted dimwit who brought home a stray dog she nearly run over. Events lead to Kimmy being kidnapped and stranded in a remote province, and Dora to impersonating her sister as the head of the company.

Domingo is comically transfixing as the lead of actor Piolo Pascual's second venture in film production, and even if her characters' motivations are frustratingly rudimentary, the film's delirious horseplay whisks much of the screenplay's trivial shortcomings. The running length diffuses some of the humor thin, but it nonetheless provides a smart proof of Domingo's versatility as an actress. Perhaps it's why she easily upstages her co-stars; she can carry a movie by herself. Or make it two of her selv

Whiteout

The Plot:
For U.S. Marshal Carrie Stetko, things are about to get even more dangerous. The only law enforcement in this unforgiving territory, she has just been sent to investigate a body on the ice. Antarctica's first homicide. A shocking discovery in itself, it will plunge her into an even more bizarre mystery and the revelation of secrets long-buried under the endless ice--secrets that someone believes are still worth killing for. As Stetko races to find the killer before he finds her, winter is already closing in. In the deadly Antarctic whiteout, she won't see him till he's a breath away.

My Take:
The trailer looked like there were some kind of monsters in all that darkness that was the Antartic. Turns out, the only monsters I saw were the set pieces and the special effects, which were average at best. Totally misleading as I never would have seen the plot of this movie coming.

In the relm of good movies for this year, Whiteout ranks in the lower 5% of that I have seen. The story line is weak, the plot is boring, and there are few events that are not predicted by the first 20 minutes of less-than-robust action. The addition of a "whiteout" storm added only moderate suspense to a lifeless story. The lack of special effects was only slightly more noticeable than the lack of thematic coherence guiding the audience from the beginning to the end of the movie.

It wasn't horrible, just had a weak storyline. Not too exciting or clever. Just really, ok. Not a total waste of time, just a partial waste. It's very very very average and could be a made-for-tv movie quite easily. As a matter of fact they can run on TV with no editing or scenes cut.

Canon Future Nation introduces cutting edge digital cameras

Canon Marketing Philippines shook up the imaging industry with the launch of seven new cutting-edge cameras in an ambitious staging of the event dubbed “Canon Future Nation.” Held in the dramatic 600-square-meter hall of Whitespace Makati, Canon Future Nation treated key press and business partners to an exciting showcase of innovation and passion for customer delight as embodied by its latest gadget offerings: the prosumer PowerShot G11 and S90, the telephoto PowerShot SX20 IS and SX120 IS, the slim and stylish Digital IXUS 120 IS and 200 IS, and the much-anticipated EOS 7D DSLR.

All of Canon’s new digital compact cameras incorporate the improved Smart AUTO Mode with Scene Detection Technology. This handy feature enables Canon cameras to analyze shooting situations—type of subject, color information, movement and focusing distance—and to automatically select the optimal settings to give users the best shots every time. With Smart AUTO, users are freed from the effort of switching from Macro to Portrait, Night Snapshot to Slow Shutter, and 18 other specially defined settings that are designed to give users the confidence to shoot creatively, knowing that the camera has all the technical details covered.

Moreover, Canon is to date the only manufacturer to feature Servo AF/AE, which enables the camera to continuously adjust focus and exposure even after the shutter button has been pressed halfway.

From the PowerShot range, the RAW-capable G11 and S90 take the prosumer spotlight with two key innovations: the Dual Anti-Noise System, which builds on the power of DIGIC 4 to significantly improve low-light performance, and a 10-Megapixel High-Sensitivity CCD sensor that features bigger photodiodes, effectively optimizing per-pixel sensitivity. The result? Images that are “cleaner” and more brilliant than ever. The G11 stands out with an all-new Vari-angle LCD screen and a classic DSLR-like body, while the S90 impresses with its bright, F/2.0 lens packed in a slim and solid form.

Great bets for compacts to capture the fancy of travelers and sports photographers are the PowerShot SX20 IS and SX120 IS, versatile models that can capture macro shots at 0cm to super zoom shots at 20x and 10x Optical Zoom, respectively. Both models are also armed with DIGIC 4 Imaging Processor and 720p HD Movie Recording.

Strengthening the smart and sophisticated Digital IXUS line are two groundbreaking slim cameras: the IXUS 120 IS, Canon’s slimmest 28mm camera to date, and the IXUS 200 IS, the brand’s first-ever touch panel model. Equipped with 12.1-Megapixel sensors, both these cameras can take 720p HD stills and movies and come in a wide range of classic colors.

Last but certainly not the least, the most awaited addition to the EOS Digital family, EOS 7D, saw the dawn of Philippine market. EOS 7D is built for the demanding advanced amateur photographer who would invest in the right equipment to achieve the desired results. Powered by two DIGIC 4 processors, the EOS 7D offers the highest quality images in its class with an 18-megapixel CMOS sensor (APS-C size) and user-selectable sensitivity range from ISO 100-6400 (expandable to ISO 12,800). It also features a high continuous shooting rate of 8fps to capture fast-moving action sequences at a maximum burst of approximately 94 shots for large/fine jpeg images, and 15 shots in RAW.
